I’m trying out a poetry prompt series for September, let’s see how it goes. I’ll put up a few scattered pieces.

#1 — Blinding Light

i never knew what it was,
to live in something other than darkness.
i only learnt the word recently.
my tongue writhes,
unable to grasp the unfamiliar syllables.
when hopelessness is all that
you’ve ever experienced,
hope becomes alien.
a legend passed on by ancestors.
of a time when there was the sun,
its rays illuminating the world around.
i struggle to not resent the past,
when the future was shaped by it,
their future, my bleak present.
a community of cowering beings,
crouching in catacombs,
creatures of the dark.
like every society,
we have divisions,
outcasts of the outcasts,
and they send whispers
through the rocks.
burrowing stories of change,
worms in our ears.
i know not why my mind
refuses to listen,
stubbornly envisioning
a world i will never have.
yet, two words stick to my skin,
making my insides flutter,
blinding light.
